Hi. I have Volt Pro 1200 Watt 12v-22v Muti-Tap Transformer. It's about 2 1/2 years old. It's worked well so far.

Some of my lights went down last night and when I went to look at the transformer to troubleshoot, I found that my COM4 port was burned. The COM4 circuit breaker was not tripped.

    So, I have two questions:

    1. What could have happened to cause this without the circuit breaker being tripped?
    2. Can the multi-taps be replaced or should the transformer be replaced?

    Thanks.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that that model has a primary internal circuit breaker that automatically resets. If I were you, I would call Volt customer service for advice on the issue you encountered. My guess is that they might want to know what wire gauges you're using (and which taps), and what your lighting loads are and your run lengths.

It sounds like a ground-fault - it is rare but in these cases the circuit breaker may not operate fast enough to prevent shock to the unit from a short-circuit. But, the GFCI was able to quickly shutoff to prevent shock there if your outlet is still working. It is difficult to say exactly what cause it without inspecting the entire system as it lies - most common would be arching from unseeable wire damage or possibly a lightning strike if you've had storms in the area.

All of our transformers come with lifetime warranties and under this warranty any repairs we would want to do in house to maintain the integrity of the product. Depending on the severity, we will send out a brand new replacement as well if needed. If you haven't already, give our customer support a call at 813 978 3700 and one of our reps would be happy to help setup a return for you.
