Can I put an "in-line" on/off switch to control one section of my landscape lighting?

I have a wood privacy fence around my backyard and just installed a putting green. I want to add a section of Low Voltage lights on the posts that will illumnate my putting green, however I would like to turn them off at night, so they don't shine in our bedroom windows, but I want to leave all the other landscape lighting on. I would like to know if I can add an in-line "on/off" switch that will allow me to turn this section on/off as needed, while all others stay on. If so, is there a recommended switch to use?

Kevin: Conceptually, any 120V or 220V cord switch would work. There are plenty of options available on the internet. A waterproof switch or a regular switch mounted in a waterproof junction box would do, but there is a caveat. If the installation is not perfectly water tight, moisture will enter the mainline, corrode the copper wire inside the sheathing and cause voltage drop. When the transformer starts tripping you could end up replacing several feet of internally corroded, blackened copper mainline (I speak from experience in that regard).

Assuming you have a GFCI outdoor outlet near your fence, I can think of a couple of alternatives. The first is a Volt AC to DC inline power converter, plugged into a smart plug installed in the outdoor outlet. You would control the on/off from a smartphone app for the smart plug. Another option would be the Ring transformer that Volt sells. This would require the Ring bridge to control the transformer and again you would control the on/off with the Ring smartphone app. If you don’t already own a smartphone controlled bridge, the Ring option would be my preferred choice. You would be amazed how much stuff you can add around the house and control from a wifi bridge.

    Have fun. Bob
