Looking for some advice on the topic. I’m having some new steps built out of brick and will have stone treads 8’ wide. I’m debating on whether to use capstone lights underneath the tread overhang or actual step lights in the risers. (They are 8’ wide and there will be 5 of them. I’m thinking at a minimum I’ll need two per step about 4’ on center.) Any recommendations on which approach is better? Thanks
Hard to advise without a photo of your existing layout but I always advise people to first consider their priorities and then go from there. Are you lighting more for aesthetics or for safety? Will the overhang extend far enough to safely accommodate capstone/hardscape fixtures? Do you want your fixtures to blend into the steps such that the light source is hidden or do you like the look of visible step lights centered in the riser? Do you have a sense of how brightly lit you want your steps to be overall. Those are the kinds of questions that would influence my decision-making. At our house, we light the front and rear steps with a combination of step lights and path lights. Also might be a good idea to look at some real life examples here on VOLT’s site as well as online and in your neighborhood. HTH
