I've got a 16 year old patio lighting system in need of an upgrade with new weatherproof wiring, and connections, plus maybe new cans, and some sort of an upgrade to the most modern bulbs. Thanks.
If you're just starting out, I'd recommend a kit that includes a transformer, wiring, hubs, bulbs, and the fixture types you want to upgrade. If you feel really confident in your DIY skills, and you want to upgrade to a smart lighting system, there are kits which include that option as well. If you have additional information, will be happy to give you additional guidance. https://www.voltlighting.com/shop/landscape-lighting/kits
Bill: Which "first part" do you mean? You simply stated you have an old system that you want to upgrade. Perhaps if you rephrase your post as an actual question, I or someone else here might be able to give you more meaningful feedback. FTR, I don't work for VOLT. I'm just a DIYer and longtime VOLT customer. You can always contact VOLT customer service if you want the most professional advice. Cheers.
Without knowing the size of your patio or seeing the layout, I can only give educated guesses as to what techniques and products would work best for you. I can’t recommend any wire brand over another but your best bet is probably 12 gauge or 14 gauge (for longer runs) direct burial cable. Although it’s nice to be able to bury connections so that everything is neat and tidy, my personal preference for protecting connections from the elements is to use hubs. Having my connections above ground makes it easier to troubleshoot wiring issues that might arise and it also makes it easier to move fixtures. Perhaps I’ve just had bad luck or I’m not very good at creating secure connections but the wire connectors I’ve used in the past (see link below) haven’t worked out very well for me. There are numerous choices for in grade and well lights. Among other factors, you want to choose fixtures based on your budget, what you’re lighting, how compact or low profile you need your fixtures to be, brightness level, and configurability.
