Hello, New member, was referred to this forum for some help with lighting choices and layout. We've been using Govee lights just as a temporary option and now are looking for a permanent option that our back yard project is complete.
Hi, Chris. I'd love to offer some recommendations. Could you please give folks an idea of what you're planning to light? I'm assuming you mean the patio area (are those black objects in the gravel area lights or sprinkler heads)? Did you mean to include the area as far out as the perimeter of the yard? Tell us more about what you're hoping to accomplish. Thanks!
Hey thanks for the reply.. I apologize, the black objects are the govee lights currently in place. I would like to light just the patio area with some flooding of the retaining wall. I'm open to suggestions as I cant really find anything similar in my searches. Looking to just add the final touch on the area more or less lights we aren't leaning either way.
No problemi, Chris. Depending on the extent to which you want to emphasize either aesthetics or safety, there's any number of ways you could light that retaining wall and surrounding features. When I find myself faced with an overwhelming number of choices, I sometimes find it easier to first decide what I don't want. For instance, if you have concerns about possible trip hazards, you might want to exclude path lights from your lighting plan. Do you want to highlight sections of the wall (in which case you might want to use spotlights exclusively) or do you want to illuminate the entire wall (in which case, you'll probably want to go with flood lights). Do you want your lights to be as unobtrusive as possible? Then maybe you want to place well light fixtures where the existing fixtures are. Again, you have a lot of options. You could flood the wall of boulders with light (basically backlighting those ornamental grasses. You could instead, place a flood light or well light in front of each of those ornamental grasses, which would cast shadows against the wall. The latter approach would highlight your grasses and capture their movement when the weather is breezy. Do you want to illuminate the contours of the patio? Maybe you could use some low profile well lights that would highlight the edges of your patio. I absolutely think you should spotlight those conifers in the background. That would create a striking backdrop for your retaining wall. It really comes down to budget, how much light you want to introduce to that area overall, and how you plan to use your yard. HTH
