I have had my Volt lights for about five years. What causes the plastic LED housing to crack? I am getting frustrated because my last batch of Volt bulbs are cracking within a few two months. This is happening at various locations in the front and backyard. This is my first post so thank you for helping me understand.
Hey there, Without really inspecting the system and bulb itself, its difficult for us to say why a bulb housing may have cracked - it could be a result of a lightning strike, overvoltage, or related to the lamp-ready fixture just to name a few. Under the lifetime warranty we offer, we'll be happy to cover shipping to get the items back in house so we can inspect them further for you! We also have live experts available who can help troubleshoot what, if anything, may be causing this. If you give us a call at 813-978-3700, we can look up your account/order info and verify a shipping address for replacements.
I can answer this-- you have nothing to worry about if I you are talking about the surface of the LED bulbs body. The bulbs are aluminum bodies but we coat them in plastic as a protectant. More specifically to protect them from galvanic corrosion. Dissimilar metals like aluminum and brass dont like to touch. Sincxe the LED bodies are aluminum and the fixtures are brass, we added this as an extra but unnecessary buffer. Most co's do not do this. The plastic coating will crack over time and with heat cycles but it is just the surface coating over the lamp/bulb. It does not affect performance of the light and is purly cosmetic. The lamp is inside the fixture and normally not seen so I am surprised you noticed this. If your lamp has failed that is a different story. If that is the case then the lamp/bulb mosrt likly failed due to overheating (not your fault or problem but a defect in the lamp that caused it to overheat. The overheating before it failed could trigger the coating to crack more than usual. Then when you inspected the failed bulb you saw the cracking. IE the cracking is not the problem. If you have any failed lamps we would be happy to send you free new ones--lifetime warranty. If they are working, dont worry, there is no problem.
