Please see the daylight view and current night time lighting in the attached pics. These wall wash lights continue to fail. I would like to upgrade to Volt Lighting. I’m not sure if I want to wall wash again or install spotlights. I don’t have the expertise to add lighting to the structure. I would like all lighting to be uplighting. Based on the layout of the house, any suggestions?
Hi, Kris. Please see my diagram of your photo for my recommendations. I’d definitely go for spotlights over floodlights. You can choose your beam spread (I’d recommend 38 degrees) and you can focus the lights on the house and avoid excessive light trespass. A 2700K color temperature would be my recommendation and because both the siding and brick are predominantly light in color (and it appears there’s not much ambient night light), I’d go with 2W or 3W max lamps.
I’ve been studying the layout of my house thoroughly today, and interestingly came up with the same layout of 8 lights. I was just afraid that it would be too much light. But your recommendation makes me more comfortable with that many lights. My next question, is there any advantage with using Top Dog fixtures instead of the Fat Boy fixtures with this 8 light layout?
If over lighting is a major concern, you’ll definitely want to confirm that the combined brightness level of your new fixture lamps isn’t higher than your existing light output. The remarkable difference between the design of the Fatboy and the Top Dog fixtures is that the glare guard on the latter allows somewhat finer light output control. For your lighting project, I’m doubtful it’d make a huge difference. Someone whose a bit more on the finicky side might feel otherwise. It’s also worth mentioning that the Fatboy has both a 4 foot and a 25 foot lead wire option. For some reason, the Top Dog is only available with a 4 foot lead wire.
